Relocating to Brazil with your family
How a family plans Brazil: jus soli for a child born there, Rio and São Paulo schools, private healthcare, and why the parents do not become Brazilian because the baby is.
Who this is suitable for
Families who already know the city, usually Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, and who will live there for a school year or longer. Not a good fit if the plan is a beach month and a passport.
Visa and residence
Brazil does not have one family visa that covers every passport. Work, investment, family reunion, and retirement routes are different files. A German or Thai passport does not skip the step. Counsel names the route that matches how you will actually earn and how long the children will be in school.
Family residence
A spouse and children are usually dependents of the principal applicant, not a separate lifestyle visa. The baby’s file, if there is a birth in Brazil, is not the parents’ residence permit. Do not merge them.
Work
A remote job for a foreign employer is not automatically legal work in Brazil. If the contract, the tax residence, or the payroll changes, a Brazilian employment or contractor structure has to be designed by counsel and an accountant, not by the relocation desk.
Business
Opening a Brazilian company (often an LTDA) needs a local accountant, a CNPJ, and a clear story of who owns it. We introduce the accountant. We do not incorporate the company or hold the shares.
Schools
In Rio, families usually compare the German school (Escola Alemã), British and American curricula, and a Brazilian school if Portuguese is the point. In São Paulo the same choice exists at a larger scale. Sibling places and the commute through traffic decide the shortlist, not the brochure.
Healthcare
SUS is the public system. Most relocating families also hold private cover (Unimed, Amil, Bradesco Saúde, and others) because a newcomer should not learn the public queue in the first week. A birth plan names the hospital before the third trimester.
Housing
Foreign families can rent, but many landlords want a guarantor (fiador) or a larger deposit. Leblon, Ipanema, and Lagoa are not the same budget as Barra or a São Paulo neighbourhood near the school. Flooding in the wet season is a question for the street, not the city.
Cost of living
International school fees in Rio or São Paulo are a European private-school number, often the largest line after rent. Domestic help is more common and less expensive than in Germany. Imported goods and cars are not cheap.
Family-friendly areas
Rio: Lagoa, Leblon, Ipanema, parts of Jardim Botânico and Barra, judged by the school gate. São Paulo: Jardins, Pinheiros, Vila Madalena, and the corridors near the specific school. A view of the sea is not a school plan.
Safety
Brazil is not one risk level. Street crime is real in both cities and is managed by neighbourhood, building security, school transport, and not performing wealth. We do not sell a ‘safe country’ label. We do ask which street the children walk.
International schools
Ask for the curriculum (IB, Brazilian, German, British, American), the language of the playground, mid-year entry, and whether the younger sibling has a seat. Admissions belong to the school.
Birth abroad
A child born on Brazilian territory is Brazilian, including when both parents are foreign, except the child of a foreign diplomat. That is jus soli. It is a nationality for the child. It is not a passport for the mother or the father.
Birth registration
The hospital issues a Declaração de Nascido Vivo. The birth is then registered at a cartório, which issues the certidão de nascimento. After that, the parents’ own embassy can register the birth for the parents’ nationality, if that country allows it. CPF for the child is a separate errand.
Citizenship rules
The child’s Brazilian citizenship is the birthright. Parents do not acquire it by the birth. Later naturalisation of a parent is a different, longer file with its own residence and language conditions. Anyone selling a ‘family passport in one delivery’ is not describing Brazilian law.
Parent immigration
A Brazilian minor child can be the basis for a parent’s residence authorisation. That authorisation has its own forms, fees, and police checks. It is residence, reviewed by the federal police and immigration rules, not citizenship, and it can be refused.
Banking
A bank will ask for a CPF, a local address, and usually a residence document. We prepare the appointment and the translations. The bank decides. There is no informal way around that which we will touch.
Property
Foreigners can buy urban property. Rural land and land near borders have extra restrictions. A purchase is a lawyer’s job: matrícula, debts, and who signs. We coordinate the family side, the school commute, and the move-in.
Business setup
If the business is the reason for the visa, the company file and the visa file have to match. We will not start a shopfront to decorate a residence application.
Transportation
Rio and São Paulo traffic makes the school run the real commute. Many families use school buses. Ride-hailing works; a private driver is a later decision, not day one. We can arrange the airport pickup.
Nanny and childcare
A babá or a berçário is arranged after you know the neighbourhood and the language you want spoken to the child. We introduce candidates. The employment contract is local labour law, not a side letter from us.
International health insurance
A travel policy will not cover a planned birth or a school year. Budget a local plan or an international plan that pays hospitals in Rio or São Paulo directly. Check the maternity waiting period before you book the flight pregnant.
Timeline
A school-year move is often 4–8 months once the visa category is chosen. A birth planned in Brazil needs the hospital and the parents’ own passport rules started before the third trimester, not after the cartório.
Estimated budget
We quote the coordination after the city and the headcount are known. Expect, separately, school deposits, a rent deposit or fiador, private insurance, a container from Europe, and legal fees paid to the lawyer. There is no honest single number for ‘a move to Brazil’.
Documents
Passports with spare validity, birth and marriage certificates, school reports, vaccination cards, and apostilles where the consulate asks. The baby’s documents, if the birth is in Brazil, start at the hospital and do not exist before that day.
Professional partners
Immigration counsel, a cartório-literate lawyer if there is a birth or a purchase, an accountant if there is a company, and the school’s admissions office. We name them when they are instructed. We do not pretend to be them.
Frequently asked questions
If my baby is born in Brazil, are the parents Brazilian?
No. The child born in Brazil is Brazilian, except a diplomat’s child. The parents may later apply for residence because of the child. That is not citizenship.
Can we register the birth at our own embassy as well?
Usually yes, if your country registers births abroad. The Brazilian certidão comes first. The embassy registration is what gives the child your passport. Both can be true.
Is Rio the only city you plan?
No. Rio is the corridor families ask for from Freiburg. São Paulo, Curitiba, and other cities are planned when the school and the work are actually there.
Book a family assessment
Tell us the passports, the children’s ages, and whether a birth is part of the year. We come back with a plan, or with a no.
This is family orientation, not a visa grant and not legal advice. Licensed counsel in the country confirms the rule before you travel, sign, or give birth.
