Relocating to Canada with your family

Province by province: a child born in Canada is Canadian, the parents are not, and healthcare, school, and immigration all sit with the province as well as Ottawa.

Who this is suitable for

Families with a real immigration path, usually through work or a provincial nomination, who will live in one city long enough for school. Not a fit for a ‘North America’ trial winter.

Visa and residence

Permanent residence and a temporary work permit are different lives. Express Entry, a provincial nominee programme, an intra-company transfer, and a study permit for a parent are counsel’s categories. Quebec selects skilled workers itself. We do not file the immigration forms. We make the family plan match the category counsel says is real.

Family residence

A spouse and children need to be in the application, not added as an afterthought. An open work permit for a spouse exists in some programmes and not in others. Ask before you assume both adults can earn.

Work

A job offer, a labour-market opinion where required, and a permit that names the employer or exempts it. Working while a visitor is not the plan. Credential recognition for medicine, teaching, and trades can take longer than the permit.

Business

A federal or provincial corporation is easy to form and is not an immigration programme by itself. The start-up visa and provincial entrepreneur streams have their own tests. We introduce a lawyer. We do not sell a business visa.

Schools

Public school is provincial and, in Quebec, French-language rules for immigrant children are strict. Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal have private and international options on top of good public systems. The school district follows the address. Choose the address after the programme, not before.

Healthcare

Provincial plans (OHIP, MSP, AHCIP, RAMQ, and the others) are the system. Some provinces still apply a waiting period for new residents and some do not. The rule changes. Hold private cover until the card works. A birth during a waiting period is an invoice if you guessed wrong.

Housing

Toronto and Vancouver rents and purchase prices are the constraint. A lease wants credit you do not yet have in Canada. Some landlords accept a larger deposit or an employer letter. We look. We do not promise a detached house in the first month.

Cost of living

Housing is the number in the two biggest cities. Public school is free for residents. Childcare costs fell in many provinces under the federal agreement and are still not nothing, and places remain scarce. Winter clothing is a real first-month line.

Family-friendly areas

Follow the school district and the transit. Mississauga and the Toronto suburbs, North Vancouver, Calgary neighbourhoods near the school. A cottage is not the address.

Safety

Canadian cities are generally safe and have ordinary urban problems, including, in some downtowns, visible street poverty. Judge the block. Winter driving is a skill, not a mood.

International schools

Usually unnecessary if the public school will take the child, and useful when the language or the curriculum has to stay continuous for two years. Fees are lower than Dubai and still material.

Birth abroad

A child born in Canada is a Canadian citizen, other than the child of a foreign diplomat. That is jus soli. The parents do not become Canadian. A birth is not a permanent-residence application and we will not plan one as if it were.

Birth registration

The province issues the birth certificate. A Canadian passport for the child is then a federal application. If you also want your own country’s passport for the child, the embassy does that in parallel. Both are normal.

Citizenship rules

The child’s Canadian citizenship is real and is the child’s. Parents become permanent residents, and later citizens, only through the immigration programme they qualify for. Years, language, and presence rules apply to them. None of that is completed in the hospital.

Parent immigration

Having a Canadian baby does not give the parents a visa to stay. If the parents are visitors, they are still visitors. Sponsorship of parents is a different programme, with income tests, and it is not available simply because a birth occurred.

Banking

A SIN, a passport, and an address. The big banks have newcomer packages. Credit history starts at zero. We make the introduction. We do not guarantee a mortgage.

Property

Foreign-buyer restrictions and taxes exist and have changed. Residents are in a different position from non-residents. A lawyer searches the title. Do not buy in the first month because the rent felt high.

Business setup

A corporation or a sole proprietorship, with an accountant who understands both Canadian tax and the country you left.

Transportation

A car is the family default outside central Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. Winter tyres are not optional in many provinces. Airport pickup with seats for the landing, especially in January.

Nanny and childcare

Licensed daycare waitlists are long. A nanny is a Canadian employer relationship, with payroll and, if you recruit from abroad, an immigration file of her own. We help you look locally first.

International health insurance

Buy it for the waiting period and for the flight. Cancel it when the provincial card actually pays, not when someone said it would.

Timeline

Permanent residence is often measured in a year or more. A work permit can be faster and still slips. School registration needs the address. Do not ship the container before the permit is real.

Estimated budget

Quoted per city. Toronto and Vancouver housing dominates. Calgary and Montreal are different numbers. Immigration fees are paid to the government and to counsel, not to us.

Documents

Passports, police certificates, medical exams for the immigration file, civil certificates, school transcripts, and proof of funds where the programme asks.

Professional partners

A licensed Canadian immigration consultant or lawyer, a provincial health registration, the school board, and an accountant. Our New York desk is not a Canadian filing office. The file is local.

Frequently asked questions

Is a baby born in Canada Canadian?

Yes, except the child of a foreign diplomat. The parents do not become Canadian and do not receive permanent residence because of the birth.

Does Quebec follow the same rules?

Immigration selection and the language of school do not. Say if Montreal is the city before we plan anything.

When does healthcare start?

It depends on the province. Hold private insurance until the card works.

Book a family assessment

Tell us the passports, the children’s ages, and whether a birth is part of the year. We come back with a plan, or with a no.

This is family orientation, not a visa grant and not legal advice. Licensed counsel in the country confirms the rule before you travel, sign, or give birth.
