Relocating to Chile with your family
Santiago as a family base: who is Chilean at birth, who is only in transit, schools in the capital, and private health cover.
Who this is suitable for
Families with work or a company in Santiago, or a clear reason to be in Chile for several years. Not a fit if the plan is ‘South America’ without a city.
Visa and residence
Chilean residence categories change names more often than the underlying idea: you need a lawful stay that matches work, family, or investment. Tourist entry is not a school-year plan. Counsel files the category that fits the passport and the contract.
Family residence
Dependants are attached to a principal residence. A child already in school in Santiago still needs a status that lets them stay the whole year, not a border run.
Work
Employment is the usual anchor. A foreign remote contract does not replace a Chilean work authorisation if you are living in Chile and the tax residence follows you. An accountant has to say which one you are.
Business
A Chilean company is a separate file from the family’s housing. We introduce corporate counsel. We do not sell a shelf company as a residence trick.
Schools
The international market is in Santiago: Nido de Aguilas, Lincoln International, Craighouse, and the German school among others. Places are tighter than the map suggests. Start with the child’s language, not with the neighbourhood café.
Healthcare
Fonasa is the public fund. Isapres are private. Newcomers usually need private or international cover for the first months, and a paediatrician who will see a child before the local plan is active.
Housing
Las Condes, Vitacura, Lo Barnechea, and Providencia are the family corridors because that is where the schools are. Rentals ask for a local guarantor or several months of deposit. Altitude is not the issue. The commute to the specific campus is.
Cost of living
Santiago can be calmer on rent than Rio’s beach districts and still expensive once two international-school invoices arrive. Groceries are manageable. Imported cars and school buses are not an afterthought.
Family-friendly areas
Stay inside the school’s actual traffic radius. The eastern communes are the default for international families. A vineyard weekend is not a weekday address.
Safety
Santiago has ordinary city crime and, in some years, more serious street crime in specific districts. Judge the building and the school run. Do not import a headline about the whole country into the lease.
International schools
Ask whether the school is on the Chilean calendar (summer in January) and whether your child would repeat or skip. Mid-year moves from Europe collide with that calendar.
Birth abroad
A child born in Chile is not automatically a plan for the parents. Chilean nationality at birth has an exception for the children of foreigners in transit and of foreign diplomats. If you are on a tourist entry, do not assume the child is Chilean. Counsel classifies the stay before the due date.
Birth registration
The hospital record is registered with the Civil Registry (Registro Civil), which issues the birth certificate. Your embassy then registers the birth for your own nationality if your law allows it.
Citizenship rules
Where the child does acquire Chilean nationality, it is the child’s. Parents do not become Chilean by the delivery. Naturalisation later is a residence file with its own years.
Parent immigration
A Chilean child may help a parent’s residence case. It does not issue the parent a passport in the hospital. The residence application is a separate submission.
Banking
Banks want a RUT, an address, and a residence document. We book the meeting and the translations. The compliance desk still says yes or no.
Property
Foreigners can buy. The title search and the tax situation are a Chilean lawyer’s work. We keep the purchase inside the school commute.
Business setup
Only if the business is real. A company opened to decorate a visa, with no activity, is a file we will not build.
Transportation
Santiago’s metro and a car both matter. School buses are common. Airport pickup from Arturo Merino Benítez is a first-week task, not a lifestyle.
Nanny and childcare
A nana is a local employment contract. We introduce people after the neighbourhood is chosen. We are not the employer.
International health insurance
Hold cover that pays private clinics in Santiago from the day you land, including maternity if a birth is planned. A travel policy expires before a school year does.
Timeline
School applications for a January or March start should be open while you are still abroad. Residence timing depends on the category. Plan six months, not six weeks.
Estimated budget
Coordination is quoted per family. School fees, a rent deposit, insurance, and legal fees sit on top. Santiago is not a bargain once two children are in international school.
Documents
Passports, civil certificates with apostille, school transcripts, and vaccination records. If a birth is planned, add the parents’ embassy requirements before the flight.
Professional partners
A Chilean immigration lawyer, the Civil Registry if there is a birth, the school admissions office, and an accountant if there is a company or a tax-residence question.
Frequently asked questions
Is every baby born in Chile Chilean?
No. Children of foreign diplomats and of foreigners who are only in transit are the exception people miss. A tourist stay can fall on the wrong side of that line. Ask counsel before the birth, not after.
Do parents receive residence automatically?
No. A child’s nationality and a parent’s permit are different decisions.
Where do families actually live?
Almost always Santiago, near the school. The rest of Chile is a trip, not the Tuesday morning.
Book a family assessment
Tell us the passports, the children’s ages, and whether a birth is part of the year. We come back with a plan, or with a no.
This is family orientation, not a visa grant and not legal advice. Licensed counsel in the country confirms the rule before you travel, sign, or give birth.
