Relocating to Germany with your family

Germany for families arriving from abroad: Anmeldung, school obligation, public insurance, and when a child born in Germany is German.

Who this is suitable for

Families moving to Germany for work, study, or a German spouse, including households coming from Thailand, Brazil, or elsewhere who need the first months explained without folklore.

Visa and residence

A national visa from the consulate, then a residence permit from the Ausländerbehörde after arrival, is the ordinary sequence for non-EU citizens. EU citizens register and work. The job, the family reunion, or the German spouse is the basis. An appointment at the immigration office can be the slowest object in the move.

Family residence

Spouses and children need their own permits. A spouse may need to show German at A1 before the visa, with exceptions. Children are not an afterthought on a parent’s card. Plan the appointment for every passport.

Work

The EU Blue Card, a skilled-worker permit, or an intra-company transfer are counsel’s categories, tied to a contract and a salary threshold that changes. Working before the permit allows it is a bad start. Recognition of a foreign qualification can be its own months.

Business

A GmbH or freelance activity (Freiberufler) is possible and is an accountant’s and a lawyer’s design. It can support a residence permit only when the immigration office accepts the business plan. We do not write that plan as fiction.

Schools

School is compulsory (Schulpflicht). The state, the child’s age, and the language determine Grundschule versus an international school. International schools exist in Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Düsseldorf and they are the exception, not the system. A Willkommensklasse or DaZ support is how many children enter.

Healthcare

Employees join statutory insurance (GKV). High earners may choose private (PKV), which is hard to leave and which must cover dependants. Register a paediatrician early. They have lists.

Housing

The housing shortage in Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Berlin is the fact. A Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from the landlord is what lets you do Anmeldung. Without Anmeldung, the bank, the school, and the permit all stall. We look for a lease that a foreign family can actually sign.

Cost of living

Munich and Frankfurt are the expensive end. Rent is the line. School is free in the public system. Kita (daycare) has fees that vary by city and can have long waitlists. Private international school is a different budget entirely.

Family-friendly areas

Follow the Kita place and the school district (Schulsprengel), not the restaurant street. In Freiburg, families already know the city’s scale. In Berlin, the district changes the school and the waitlist.

Safety

Germany is an ordinary safe European destination. The practical risks are a missing Anmeldung and a child with no school place, not a security detail.

International schools

Useful when the stay is short or the language gap is too wide for this term. Expensive, and not a way to avoid Schulpflicht. Ask whether the school is recognised and what happens when you later want the German Abitur.

Birth abroad

A child born in Germany is not automatically German. Under the nationality law, a child acquires German citizenship at birth if one parent is German, or if a foreign parent has been lawfully resident for a defined number of years and holds a permanent right of residence. The year-count changed recently. Counsel checks the parent’s actual residence history. Do not guess it.

Birth registration

The birth is registered at the Standesamt, which issues the Geburtsurkunde. You also notify your own embassy if the child should hold your other nationality. Health insurance must cover the delivery. A midwife (Hebamme) is booked early because the good ones are full.

Citizenship rules

German citizenship for the child follows the parent’s status, not the hospital’s postcode. Parents become German only through their own naturalisation, with residence, language, and a test, or through descent. A birth does not naturalise them.

Parent immigration

A German child can be relevant to a parent’s residence. It is not an automatic permit for a parent who has no other right to stay. Family reunion has its own conditions, including, often, income and space in the flat.

Banking

Anmeldung plus a passport opens most everyday accounts. Some banks still hesitate with a brand-new permit. We make the appointment. Schufa does not exist for you on day one, which is why some landlords struggle. Say so early.

Property

Foreigners may buy. The notary is mandatory and is not your personal adviser in the way a buyer’s lawyer is elsewhere. A purchase in a city with no school place is a bad family decision even when the financing works.

Business setup

GmbH, UG, or freelance, with a Steuerberater. Trade office registration where the activity needs it. Residence permission has to allow the activity.

Transportation

Trains, trams, and a car in smaller cities. A Kita run without a car is possible in Freiburg or Berlin and miserable in many suburbs. Airport pickup for the landing day, especially with a newborn.

Nanny and childcare

A Kita place is the scarce object. Apply before you arrive if the city allows it. A Tagesmutter or a nanny is the bridge. Au pairs have their own visa rules. We help you apply early. We cannot invent a place the city does not have.

International health insurance

Travel insurance will not satisfy a residence permit or a hospital for a birth. Plan to enter GKV or a recognised private plan. Incoming private policies must meet the immigration office’s standard.

Timeline

Often six to twelve months from the consulate to a school place and a lease. The Ausländerbehörde appointment can sit in the middle and delay the card. Anmeldung should happen within two weeks of moving into the flat.

Estimated budget

Quoted per city. Munich rent is not Freiburg rent. Public school is free. International school and a long Kita wait are the costs families forget.

Documents

Passports, birth and marriage certificates with apostille where asked, school reports, employment contract, proof of insurance, and biometric photos. Names must match.

Professional partners

German immigration counsel where the case is not straightforward, a Steuerberater, the Standesamt if there is a birth, and the school authority. Berlin and Freiburg are Gerd Nils Victor Brako’s Germany office.

Frequently asked questions

Is a baby born in Germany German?

Only if a parent is German, or if a foreign parent has the kind of long lawful residence the statute requires. Many babies born in Germany to newly arrived parents are not German. Check the actual years. Do not assume.

What is Anmeldung?

Municipal registration of your address. Without it, the bank, the school, and often the residence permit do not move. You need a landlord’s confirmation.

Do children have to attend school?

Yes. Schulpflicht applies. An international school is a choice inside that duty, not a way around it.

Book a family assessment

Tell us the passports, the children’s ages, and whether a birth is part of the year. We come back with a plan, or with a no.

This is family orientation, not a visa grant and not legal advice. Licensed counsel in the country confirms the rule before you travel, sign, or give birth.
