Relocating to Mexico with your family
Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara as family bases: nationality by birth in Mexico, temporary residence, schools, and private hospitals.
Who this is suitable for
Families who will actually live in one city, with school-age children or a birth planned in a major private hospital. Not a fit for an undefined ‘Latin America year’.
Visa and residence
Temporary resident and permanent resident are the two ideas to understand. Income, work, or family can be the basis. The consulate that issues the visa and the immigration office that stamps you after arrival are both part of the sequence. A tourist card (FMM) is not a school year.
Family residence
A spouse and children can be dependants. Each person needs a record. A baby born after you arrive needs a passport from your own country as well as the Mexican birth record.
Work
Permission to work is specific. A temporary resident is not automatically allowed to take a Mexican job. Remote work for a foreign employer still raises a tax-residence question once you live there. An accountant answers it.
Business
A Mexican company is possible and common. It needs an accountant, a tax ID (RFC), and a reason other than ‘we wanted a visa’. We introduce. We do not sign as partners.
Schools
Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara have serious international schools (American, British, IB). The school, not the restaurant scene, picks the neighbourhood. Spanish-language private schools are a real option if that is the point of the move.
Healthcare
IMSS is the public social-security system and is not what most new arrivals use in month one. Private hospitals in Mexico City and Monterrey are the practical plan, paid by international or local insurance. Maternity waiting periods are the detail that surprises people.
Housing
Polanco, Condesa, Roma, and the southern school corridors in Mexico City. San Pedro Garza García in Monterrey. Deposits of one to two months are common. Buildings differ on water pressure and security. Visit, or have us visit, before you transfer a deposit.
Cost of living
Rent and school fees are the budget. Food and household help cost less than in Western Europe. International-school invoices do not.
Family-friendly areas
Choose from the school bus map. A beach town is a holiday unless it has the school and the hospital you already named.
Safety
Mexico’s security picture is local and it changes. Some cities and some neighbourhoods are ordinary family life. Others are not a place we will place children. We will say no to a city. We will not hide inside a slogan.
International schools
Ask about the calendar, English versus Spanish support, and a seat for every child. A school that takes the oldest and waitlists the youngest is not a yes.
Birth abroad
A child born in Mexico is Mexican by the constitution. That nationality is the child’s. It does not make the parents Mexican, and it is not a reason we will help someone fly in late in pregnancy with no other life in the country.
Birth registration
The hospital certificate is taken to the Civil Registry for the Mexican birth certificate. The parents then register the birth at their embassy for their own passport. Both documents matter. Neither replaces the other.
Citizenship rules
Mexican nationality by birth belongs to the child. Parents who want residence because they have a Mexican child must apply for it. Parents who want Mexican nationality themselves are in a different, longer process.
Parent immigration
Family unity routes exist and are filed. They are not handed over in the delivery room. We sequence the civil registry first, then the immigration file, with counsel.
Banking
RFC and proof of address unlock most banks. Some banks are used to foreign residents and some are not. We make the appointment. Compliance still decides.
Property
Foreigners can buy. Land in the restricted zone near coasts and borders needs a bank trust (fideicomiso). That is a lawyer’s instrument. We will not treat it as a formality.
Business setup
Useful when there is a real activity. Useless as a sticker on a tourist plan.
Transportation
In Mexico City, the school run is traffic. Many families use the school bus or a driver. Airport pickup with car seats is part of the landing week.
Nanny and childcare
A nanny is employed locally, usually with Spanish in the house. We help you find and interview. The contract is Mexican labour law.
International health insurance
Buy it before the flight if a birth or a chronic condition is in the year. Local plans can be excellent once you are resident. The gap is the first weeks.
Timeline
Consulate visa, then the in-country card, then school. A clean version is often three to six months. A birth adds the civil registry and two passports for the child.
Estimated budget
Coordination quoted per city and family size. School fees in Mexico City can match European private schools. The fideicomiso, if you buy on the coast, is an extra legal cost.
Documents
Passports, apostilled birth and marriage certificates, proof of income if the visa is economic, school reports, vaccines.
Professional partners
Mexican immigration counsel, a civil-registry lawyer if the birth or a property trust is involved, the school, and the insurer.
Frequently asked questions
Is a baby born in Mexico Mexican?
Yes. Birth in Mexico gives the child Mexican nationality. It does not give it to the parents.
Can we buy on the coast?
Often only through a bank trust. Budget the lawyer. Do not sign a pre-contract from a chat.
Which city?
Mexico City, Monterrey, or Guadalajara for most school-age families. Tell us if the work is somewhere else before we look at houses.
Book a family assessment
Tell us the passports, the children’s ages, and whether a birth is part of the year. We come back with a plan, or with a no.
This is family orientation, not a visa grant and not legal advice. Licensed counsel in the country confirms the rule before you travel, sign, or give birth.
