Relocating to Portugal with your family
Portugal for families: AIMA appointments, schools in Lisbon and Porto, public healthcare once you are in the system, and a nationality rule that is not American-style jus soli.
Who this is suitable for
Families who will live in Lisbon, Cascais, Porto, or the Algarve for a real stretch of school, with a residence basis counsel has already named. Not a fit for a golden-visa fantasy built on a property brochure.
Visa and residence
D7, work visas, digital-nomad and student routes, and family reunion are different files. The old property golden visa is not the plan it was. AIMA, the agency that replaced SEF for much of this, has backlogs. Counsel tells you which route exists for your passport this year. We will not sell a closed route.
Family residence
A spouse and children follow the principal residence. They need their own appointments. A backlog is a calendar problem for the school, so the landing plan has to survive a slow card.
Work
A Portuguese contract, a remote-work route where it truly exists, or no work. Doing a job the visa does not allow is how residence files die. Tax residence is a separate question for an accountant, especially if you are leaving Germany.
Business
A Portuguese company is straightforward by European standards and still needs an accountant. It is not a substitute for a residence right you do not have.
Schools
Lisbon and Cascais have international and bilingual schools (St. Julian’s, Carlucci, TASIS, the German school, and public schools if Portuguese is the aim). Porto is a smaller market. Public school is in Portuguese and is a serious option, not a fallback to be ashamed of, if you give the children time.
Healthcare
SNS is the public system. Access for foreign residents depends on the residence and on social-security contributions or a specific agreement. Private insurance is what many families use while the public registration is unfinished. Maternity care in Lisbon’s private hospitals should be booked, not assumed.
Housing
Lisbon rents rose for years and have not become easy. Cascais and Oeiras are family defaults because of schools. A Portuguese lease wants a guarantor or several months up front. AAL and short-stay licences are a different market. Do not rent an Airbnb for a school year.
Cost of living
Cheaper than Zurich or central London, not cheap once rent and an international school are both in the spreadsheet. The Algarve in summer is a different budget from a winter of school.
Family-friendly areas
Cascais, Estoril, Oeiras, and parts of Lisbon near the school. Porto for families whose work is there. The Algarve if, and only if, the school has a place.
Safety
Ordinary European city safety. Pickpocketing in tourist Lisbon is the issue, not a security industry. Beaches and cliffs are the children’s risk in the Algarve.
International schools
The fee and the bus across the 25 de Abril bridge matter. A school in Cascais and a flat in Alfama is a mistake you will feel every morning.
Birth abroad
A child born in Portugal to foreign parents is not automatically Portuguese. Nationality can be available if a parent has legally resided for a defined period, or in statelessness cases. It is an application, not a stamp in the delivery room. Counsel checks the parents’ residence history before anyone relies on it.
Birth registration
The birth is registered at the Civil Registry (conservatória). The parents’ embassy then registers it for their own nationality. A Portuguese birth record and a German passport, for example, are both normal and both necessary.
Citizenship rules
Portuguese nationality for a child born there depends on the parents’ residence, not on geography alone. Parents do not become Portuguese by the birth. Later naturalisation has its own years of residence and, usually, language.
Parent immigration
A Portuguese child does not hand the parents a passport. Family residence follows the rules AIMA applies to your facts. We sequence the documents. Counsel files.
Banking
A NIF (tax number), proof of address, and a residence basis are the usual keys. Some banks still open for new arrivals and some do not. We make the appointment. We do not guarantee the account.
Property
Foreigners buy freely. The golden-visa link to most residential property has gone. Buy a home to live in, with a lawyer reading the land registry, not a visa product.
Business setup
A company or a sole trader (recibo verde) is an accountant’s design. It has tax consequences in Portugal and possibly at home.
Transportation
Trains and a car. The Cascais line is part of why families live there. Airport pickup from Lisbon with car seats is worth booking. Driving in the centre is not.
Nanny and childcare
Creches have waiting lists. A nanny is a local contract. Public childcare places are not something you should count on in the first month. We help you look early.
International health insurance
Hold private cover until SNS registration is real, not promised. If you are pregnant, the waiting period is the first question.
Timeline
Assume AIMA will be slower than the school. Start the residence file and the school file together, and rent something you can extend.
Estimated budget
Quoted per city. Lisbon rent, a possible international school, insurance for the gap, and legal fees. Do not subtract a golden visa that no longer exists.
Documents
Passports, apostilled civil documents, proof of income or a contract, school reports, and a NIF application. Apostilles from Germany are routine and still take time.
Professional partners
Portuguese immigration counsel, an accountant, the school, and a civil-registry path if there is a birth.
Frequently asked questions
Is a baby born in Portugal Portuguese?
Not automatically. It depends on a parent’s legal residence, or on statelessness. It is an application. The parents do not become Portuguese.
Does buying a flat give residence?
Do not plan on it. The property route of the golden visa was closed for most homes. Buy a flat if you need a home.
Lisbon or Porto?
Where the work and the school are. They are not interchangeable mornings.
Book a family assessment
Tell us the passports, the children’s ages, and whether a birth is part of the year. We come back with a plan, or with a no.
This is family orientation, not a visa grant and not legal advice. Licensed counsel in the country confirms the rule before you travel, sign, or give birth.
