Relocating to Spain with your family

Spain by region: non-lucrative, digital-nomad and work visas, schools in Madrid and Barcelona, and a birth that does not make the parents Spanish.

Who this is suitable for

Families who will live in one autonomous community, usually Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia, or the islands, with a visa that matches whether they may work.

Visa and residence

A non-lucrative residence does not allow you to work. A digital-nomad or work residence might. Family members follow the principal. The consulate you apply at, and the region you will live in, both matter. We do not let a family discover the work ban after the children are in school.

Family residence

A spouse and children are dependants with their own cards. Ages matter for adult children. Everyone needs empadronamiento, the municipal registration, after you have an address.

Work

If you will work for a Spanish employer, that is a work visa. If you will keep a foreign employer, the route has to say so. Beckham-law tax treatment, where it still applies, is an accountant’s opinion, not a relocation slogan.

Business

A Spanish company or autónomo status is an accountant’s file. It can be the basis of a residence only when the visa category says so.

Schools

Public and concertado schools teach in the regional language as well as Spanish. In Catalonia that means Catalan. International schools in Madrid and Barcelona are the alternative and they cost what international schools cost. Choose before you choose the flat.

Healthcare

Once you contribute to social security, public healthcare is excellent. Newcomers on a non-lucrative visa often use the convenio especial or private insurance until they are in the system. Pregnancy should not be the month you discover a waiting period.

Housing

Madrid and Barcelona rents are the constraint. A Spanish lease wants payslips, a deposit, and sometimes a bank guarantee. Empadronamiento needs a real address. Short-stay tourist flats are not a family lease.

Cost of living

Cheaper than London inside the country, not cheap in the two biggest cities once school fees are added. The coast in August is not the cost of a school-year Tuesday.

Family-friendly areas

Follow the school and the metro. Pozuelo and the northern corridor in Madrid for many international schools. Barcelona’s international campuses pull families to specific districts, not to the Gothic Quarter.

Safety

Ordinary European city risks. Pickpocketing in tourist centres. Summer heat for small children is a planning fact, not a postcard.

International schools

British, American, IB, and German schools exist in the big cities. Ask which language the child will need on day one, and whether the regional school year matches the month you can actually move.

Birth abroad

A child born in Spain to foreign parents is not automatically Spanish. Spanish nationality can be applied for after a period of residence in some cases, including a shorter period for those born in Spain. It is an application after residence, not a birthright like in the United States. Parents do not become Spanish.

Birth registration

The hospital issues the report. The Civil Registry records the birth. The parents’ consulate then registers the child for their own passport. You need both. The baby also needs to be empadronado and added to the residence file.

Citizenship rules

Nationality is a later filing, with residence and, for adults, usually language and a test. A birth in Madrid does not skip it for the parents and does not finish it for the child on the day of delivery.

Parent immigration

The parents’ visa is their own. A Spanish-born child does not sponsor them into citizenship. Family residence follows the principal’s permit.

Banking

A NIE, a passport, and proof of address open the conversation. Some banks want the residence card first. We book the appointment after the NIE path is clear.

Property

Foreigners buy. The nota simple from the land registry is the start, not the listing. A lawyer should act for you, not only for the seller. Regional taxes differ.

Business setup

Autónomo or a company, with an accountant who also understands the visa you hold. The wrong combination is a person working on a visa that forbids work.

Transportation

Metro and commuter rail in the big cities. A car on the coast and the islands. School buses for international campuses outside the centre. Airport pickup with seats for the first day.

Nanny and childcare

Public infantil places are oversubscribed. A nanny or a private nursery needs to be found before you arrive if both parents will work. The contract is Spanish employment law.

International health insurance

Often required for the visa itself. Keep it until public cover is active. Read maternity.

Timeline

Consulate appointments are the bottleneck. Start months before the school’s entry date. Empadronamiento happens after you have keys, not before.

Estimated budget

Quoted for the city and whether the school is public or international. Madrid and Barcelona rent is the surprise for families arriving from smaller European cities.

Documents

Passports, apostilled birth and marriage certificates, criminal-record certificates where the visa asks, proof of funds or a contract, school reports, and a visa medical if required.

Professional partners

Spanish immigration counsel, an accountant if anyone will work or invoice, the school, and a civil-registry path for a birth.

Frequently asked questions

Is a baby born in Spain Spanish?

Not on the day of birth. Nationality can be requested later, after residence, under a shorter clock for people born in Spain. Parents do not become Spanish.

Can we work on a non-lucrative visa?

No. If you need to work, choose a different route before you move the children.

Does the region matter?

Yes. Language of school, healthcare administration, and tax all sit with the autonomous community.

Book a family assessment

Tell us the passports, the children’s ages, and whether a birth is part of the year. We come back with a plan, or with a no.

This is family orientation, not a visa grant and not legal advice. Licensed counsel in the country confirms the rule before you travel, sign, or give birth.
