The health-insurance gap between leaving and arriving
The old cover ends. The new card is not in your hand yet. That gap is where families get hurt, and it is avoidable.

I ask every family one date: the morning the old insurance stops paying. Then I ask the second date: the morning a clinic in the new country will see you under a policy that is actually in force. If those dates do not overlap, you have a gap. Pregnancy, a regular medicine, and a child with a known condition make that gap expensive.
What to read before you cancel anything
Whether the policy at home covers you abroad, and for how many days. Whether the new policy has a waiting period. Whether a pre-existing condition is excluded. Whether the insurer requires you to be a resident before the cover starts. A quote is not cover.
Germany is a particular case
Leaving statutory or private cover in Germany can be hard to undo. Do not cancel it because a forum said you should. A broker or the insurer can say what a departure does to your file. We can put that question on the calendar. We do not give insurance advice, and we do not sell a policy.
Book the doctor and the insurer before the flight. Not from the arrivals hall.
