What happens if my baby is born in Brazil?

A child born in Brazil is Brazilian. The parents are not. Here is the cartório, the embassy, and the residence question.

What happens if my baby is born in Brazil?

A child born on Brazilian territory is Brazilian, including when both parents are foreign. The exception is the child of a foreign diplomat. That is the constitution, not a hospital courtesy.

The hospital issues a Declaração de Nascido Vivo. You take it to a cartório, which issues the certidão de nascimento. That is the Brazilian birth certificate. CPF for the child is a separate errand and you will need it for doctors and for school later.

Your own embassy then registers the birth if you want your passport as well. German, Thai, American, and other registrations are all possible and all have their own forms. Do them. A Brazilian certificate alone does not replace your passport process, and your passport process does not cancel the child’s Brazilian citizenship.

The parents do not become Brazilian. A residence authorisation based on a Brazilian minor child exists and is a federal immigration file. It can be refused. It is not citizenship and it is not handed over in the delivery room.

Private insurance should name the hospital before the third trimester. Travel policies exclude planned maternity. If the family is also moving house and school, that is a relocation mandate, not a footnote on the birth.
